More track plans…

The "Terminus Layout" (see this track-plan) is not the only one idea, which was bustling around my head! So welcome to the track plan menu with some more ideas for N scale model railroad layouts. Some of them I have realized so far, some are enterprises for the future. What will come next? The collection will be continued!

Model railroad layouts: Harbour track plan

A river port

Let me start this menu section with with 2 track plans for a "haven topic". The first track-plan above is designed as a riverport, but could also be (a section of) a seaport. A port with ships and water is always a nice idea for model railroading, as a harbor offers a lot of input for modelmaking and many tasks for freight traffic, like bulk goods, container, various freight goods or even cruise liners for passengers.

The look inside

Although just a desktop size layout, this plan has various harbor basins and docks. Note: The silo is a job for kitbashing, as one track runs "through" the silos to keep the size of this model railroad layout compact.

At the oil pier

Photos from the layout: I realized this track plan some years ago, it was my first model railroad layout at all. The river Rhine (= "Rhein") was inspiration for that work. There are many ports like this along the Rhine; probably this stream has the most ship traffic at all in Germany. Buildings are from Faller, Vollmer, Artitec or other manufacturers.

DIY: N scale ships for model railroad layouts

Getting N-scale buildings for a harbor layout is not a problem, there are enough producers. But the supply for freight ships in N scale was not satisfactory to me, especially typically cargo boats, as they run on the Rhine. So I decided to make "DIY" ships from balsa wood and simple graphics. Graphics were designed on the PC, printed, cut out, and then glued on the balsa construction.

As I like the "harbour topic" on model railroad layouts, also see this shelf layout with a harbor scenery on a much smaller space!

Layout with floodgate

The second track idea plan is a river port, too, but now with a river lock (on the upper left) as an appealing detail of this model railroad layout. A demanding task for kitbashing model making! It´s a very simple plan; nevertheless, there is enough to do for a locomotive and 3 or 4 waggons.

A matter of water levels!

The opened plan shows: One track goes behind the sluice and "under" the water! The river, coming from the upper left to the harbor, has two water levels (low and high); so the level behind the gate doors must be high enough to cover the model trains. One track runs through a silo, too; but this layout is even smaller than the 1st plan above. May be, my next harbor project…?
