You like elevated railways in an urban scenario? So let me take you to a higher place! To spice things up, we add a big station, a canal with some industry and two spectacular bridges:

Elevated railways, big city, old canal

Elevated railways are common in large cities. So a worthwhile topic for model railroaders. On the upper level, our trains literally float above everything. On the lower level we see road underpasses, brick archways or abandoned places. And, in this case, even an old canal.

All providing plenty of opportunities for detail. As for travelers, the entrance to the station is also on the lower level.

I designed this layout in KATO Unitrack (N scale) also to have a double-track main line featuring curves with superelevation. The KATO curves 20-185 and 20-186 have a built-in superelevation and a nice wide radius. This curve comes right after the double-track bridge:

As much as possible, I used mainly the large, elegant KATO turnouts in the visible areas.

Operation & concept

The concept of this 240 x 120 cm track layout is simple: Three runaround-loops for our beloved train sets. Long sidings provide enough space for long trains. The ovals have no gradients; long trains will appreciate this. So let’s reveal the secret:

However, the feeder line down to level -1 has an incline. But this route is intended only for short freight trains bound for the pier facilities along the canal.

A lock conceals the transition from the canal to the backdrop. The lock chamber is full, so the water level is high. Parts of the backdrop are moved forward for better accessibility.
