Small N gauge layout
Not everyone has a lot of space or a lot of time. So a small model railroad layout can be very charming. Or are you even a beginner? Here you are on 40” x 23”!
Small N scale track plan
What is it all about? A lovely small N scale model railway layout on 100 x 80 cm. This corresponds to approximately 40” x 23” or 3.3′ x 2.6 feet.
We see an idyllic train station, embedded in a romantic landscape. Vacationers and hikers love the region because of its picturesque castle and the historic mill.
The scenery is spiced up with a viaduct and a spring that was dammed up for the mill. The viaduct is crossed by a street, not a railway line. We can therefore do without building a ramp for the tracks. A notable point on small layouts.
The little terminus station has only two tracks. Passenger trains arrive at track 1. After that the locomotive uncouples, moves back on track 2 and couples again. Then the train leaves again. Modern commuter shuttle trains simply run in and out.
From time to time some freight wagons arrive at the sleepy station. A stone quarry is located nearby and the agricultural cooperative also needs goods.
This small N scale track plan is based on a reverse loop that is partially concealed in a tunnel. So model trains that leave the station with a pulling locomotive in front of the wagons always come back with a pulling locomotive. Train operation (almost) true to the original, isn’t it?
Facts small N gauge track plan:
- Size: 3.3′ x 2.6′ or 40” x 23” (approx.)
- Fleischmann N gauge (tracks with ballast). Adjusting to size is easy with a fine saw
- Tight curves hidden in the tunnel
- Skills: easy / medium. Just lay tracks on a basic board or table. Some woodworks necessary for tunnels and mountains
- Reversing loop needs special electric wiring to avoid short circuit
- Turnouts in the station area are manually operated. They are easily accessible in this small model railway layout. The budget is happy!

Small N scale layout
I realized this sweet little N gauge layout a few years ago with Fleischmann tracks. But this small track plan should also fit tracks from other N gauge manufacturers. More impressions:
