Small HO layouts

Small HO layouts are usually a difficult task if the design is to be appealing. See how I solved this challenge on 3′ x 4′. And to make it interesting, I’ve created two versions of the same theme. One for advanced model railroaders and one for beginners!

Small HO layout

What is it all about? We see a rural scenery with a small sleepy station. Every now and then a short passenger train stops. The platform is placed in a curve. This looks nice, but the wagons must not be long. The sawmill or the small goods shed also occasionally need a goods wagon.

The landscape is hilly. And of course I can’t do without a castle. Yes, yes, I love castles, even on small model train layouts! (Hey, I’m from Bavaria, did I mention that already?) The castle is enthroned on the top of the hill above the tunnel.

And here’s the version for beginners:

Have you noticed the difference? Probably not, because these 3×4 HO scale track plans look almost identical at first glance. So let’s reveal the secret:

Small HO track plans (3′ x 4′, two versions)

Small HO track plan

The extended version for advanced model railroaders features a folded oval. So the loop runs on two levels, which makes an incline necessary. Precise woodwork is therefore required. But you will be rewarded with a long ride, because a train that leaves the station will not return within 1 second.

The version for beginners, on the other hand, is just a simple oval on one level:

Facts 3 x 4 HO gauge track plans:

  • Size: 3′ x 4′. This corresponds to 91.4 x 121.9 cm (approx.)
  • Tracks: Märklin HO (“C tracks”)
  • Runaround loop, train station with passing track, 2 sidings, coaling
  • Slight deviations in measurements are possible. Track planning software isn’t 100% accurate
  • Some tracks must be adjusted to size. More: Cutting Märklin C tracks (YouTube)

Tips for small HO layouts

  • Do without overhead lines

    Looks lousy in tight bends

  • Do rural scenes

    Usually the better choice

  • Run short locos and wagons

Long cars look lousy in tight bends

  • Do with curved points

Curved turnouts require less space than regular turnouts

Not yours?
