HO track plan 5′ x 10′
Many model railroaders consider 5 x 10 ft. to be the minimum size for an HO layout if longer trains are to run on it. Here’s an idea for that size – with a good dose of retro charm!

What is it all about? A hilly landscape. Roads and railroad tracks emerge from tunnels or underpasses. But the eye-catcher of this HO track plan 5′ x 10′ is a large train station situated between two main lines that fork off at a 45° angle. An interesting location for a station building, isn’t it? Anyway, it gives us the impression that this scenery is truly an extensive railroad junction:

Of course, this extensive track split is just fake. So let’s reveal the secret:
HO track layout 5′ x 10′ (ft.)

Actually, there’s a simple oval on ground level 0, which runs along the outer edge of this 12 x 5 ft. HO layout. This oval is designed as a 2-track runaround loop without inclines. That makes long trains happy, right? So let’s consider this as a double-track main line with directional traffic.
In addition, there is another route that leads up to level +1. Up ahead, we have a spectacular bridge and a small train station. The small station even has its own freight shed. We do want to have tasks, don’t we?
Since this route has a steep gradient, we will consider it as a 1- track branch line on which only short trains run:

To spice things up, this 10 x 5 ft. track layout features a lot of sidings for our model trains.

I’m sure you’ve seen it: The route on level +1 makes a reverse loop before returning back to ground level 0. Fortunately, Märklin HO tracks do not require any additional electrical wiring for reversing loops, since these tracks are based on the 3-wire system.
By the way: Did you notice the siding track which ends hidden in the tunnel? A little bluff that also helps to make the whole thing look like a huuuuuuge railway junction station!
Facts:
- Size: 5′ x 10` ft. This corresponds to 152.4 x 304.8 centimeters
- HO scale track plan
- Manufacturer: Märklin C tracks
- Crossing: Märklin 24640. No double slip switch necessary
- Slight deviations in measurements are possible. Track planning software isn’t 100% accurate
