KATO N scale layout

Wide curves with superelevation. Spectacular overpasses. A busy multi-track main line. Welcome to this KATO 4 x 8 N scale track plan, which perfectly showcases long trains. And most of all: It’s not rocket science to build this layout!

What is it all about? We see the outskirts of a large city. Specifically, one of those areas where wasteland and the downside of industrialization meet. The scene is defined by numerous tracks, technical railway structures, urban buildings, bridges, concrete walls, wasteland, graffiti… and certainly a few rusty oil drums.

Several branches emerge from multiple overpasses on the right. The tracks merge into a multi-track main line in the foreground before disappearing under a road bridge on the left.

There is no large central station on this 4′ x 8′ KATO N gauge layout. Why should there be? This track plan is not made for shunting. It is intended to see long trains running. And that’s exactly what happens here. If you like trainspotting: Here you are!

However, there is a small train stop, half hidden under the road bridge on the left. But only local commuter trains stop here. Long-distance trains pass by. From the platform, a staircase leads up to the city. So it’s a typical suburban scene, as found in many large cities. Some factories with sidings complete the scene.

But the spectacular highlight of this 4 x 8 KATO N gauge track plan is a 2-track main line one level higher. It crosses the entire scenery with superelevated curves in fine wide radii.

Enough Tech-Talk. You wanna see something.

I realized this 4×8 KATO N gauge layout in winter 2025/26 within three months:

Let’s reveal the secret:

Track plan KATO 4 x 8 N scale

4x8 KATO N gauge track plan

Behind the backdrop some hidden sidings. They are easily accessible and offer space for long trains.

Facts:

  • size: 4′ x 8′ (= 243.8 x 121.9 cm)
  • tracks: KATO Unitrack N gauge
  • wide curves with superelevation (KATO Nr. 20-185)
  • gradient 2.5 %, perfect for long trains
  • no electric reversing loops
  • (almost only) wide KATO turnouts (Kato 20-202 & KATO 20-203)
  • slight deviations possible. Track planning software isn’t 100% accurate. To close gaps in the track plan, use KATO 20-050 “expansion track”

Concept & Operation

KATO N scale layout operation & concept

Three ovals (loops) = three electrical circuits = three transformers = three independent trains = that’s all! Oval 3 can be either an addional runaround loop or a feeder track to the hidden sidings behind the backdrop (= shadow station) .

Oldschool analog model railroaders will appreciate this simple concept. When using digital control, this consideration is irrelevant.

Note: KATO crossings have electrically isolated tracks, allowing a train to cross directly from oval 1 to oval 3 and vice versa.

Yes, everything is on a small 1:160 scale. But the city is big!
